Who is that working on your new concrete project?
Hi I’m Rick Hall. I am the owner of Coastal Concrete. A company I started in 1990 and I’m there on every project from start to finish.
While looking for a job in 1978, I happened to run into the owner of a small concrete placing and finishing company. He took me under his wing and paid me fairly for a hard job.
I worked in residential concrete for a couple years before starting an apprenticeship with the cement masons union local 919 and joining a union lightweight concrete company doing many apartments all over the lower mainland and then being hired on to work on B.C. place stadium. As the only apprentice on this project, I was there for most of the project.
After this I had a brief stint on the Revelstoke dam before deciding that out of town work was not for me. I managed to find a job in Vancouver for one of the top Concrete placing and finishing companies doing very high end homes and projects for elite clients with expensive taste.
This company taught me a lot and showed me an eye for detail.
In 1990, I realized that I had reached the top of my pay scale and with a growing family decided to start my own company.
It was a difficult road at first but I soon found a good group of clients that quickly began to trust my skills.
I landed some high profile projects.
In 1995 my company restored all the concrete on every square inch of the Peace Arch at the border crossing in Blaine Washington, We used hundreds of bags of a special patching material over a period of a couple months. A company painted it after we did this and it stands now as it did when we finished.
I also landed the work for the city of Burnaby on many of their speciality concrete projects on various monuments such as the plaza for the police and firemen’s game in Central Park as well as the children’s playground in Central Park with animal footprints throughout. There was also a tribute to the black bear on the first tee at the Burnaby mountain golf course among many others.
As well as thousands of projects in the lower mainland and metro Vancouver.
